He also wrote the USA's most-saved article of 2021, according to Pocket.Ĭhris was a PCWorld columnist for two years. Beyond the web, his work has appeared in the print edition of The New York Times (September 9, 2019) and in PCWorld's print magazines, specifically in the August 2013 and July 2013 editions, where his story was on the cover. Chris has personally written over 2,000 articles that have been read more than one billion times-and that's just here at How-To Geek. If you see a "WDDM 1.x" driver here, your GPU isn't compatible.Ĭhris Hoffman is the former Editor-in-Chief of How-To Geek. If you see a "WDDM 2.x" driver here, your system is compatible. Click the "Display" tab and look to the right of "Driver Model" under Drivers. You can check which version of WDDM your GPU driver is using by pressing Windows+R, typing "dxdiag" into the box, and then pressing Enter to open the DirectX Diagnostic tool. If you don't see it, your system's GPU probably uses an older type of driver. That's why only systems with WDDM 2.0-compatible GPUs show this information in the Task Manager. It shows very accurate data no matter which API applications use to access the GPU-Microsoft DirectX, OpenGL, Vulkan, OpenCL, NVIDIA CUDA, AMD Mantle, or anything else. Windows uses newer features in the Windows Display Driver Model to pull this information directly from the GPU scheduler (VidSCH) and video memory manager (VidMm) in the WDDM's graphics kernel, which are responsible for actually allocating the resources. Here's how to check which version of Windows 10 you have. If you're using Windows 7, 8, or an older version of Windows 10, you won't see these tools in your Task Manager. I hope you will continue to succeed in business, and I also will remain a fan of MSI for a long time. These GPU features were added in Windows 10's Fall Creators Update, also known as Windows 10 version 1709. I often recommend MSI gaming laptops to those who are interested in whenever I have a chance, but this kind of low quality service cases and some repetitive ridiculous bugs make me hesitate to do. (In fact, it still is a serious problem even though it takes two weeks.) If it takes around two months - not even two 'weeks' !! - for the same version of the BIOS already listed on Live Update to be registered on the official webpage, I believe it's pretty serious negligence of MSI. Some users (like me) might be getting the BIOS update through the DC, whereas some other users might be getting it installed by manually checking and downloading from their official support webpage with the DC removed. I always prefer to download all the latest updates through DC Live Update. Why can't MSI departments cooperate with each other quickly?
